Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

已更新:2021年9月17日

Many of you may experience soreness the next day after you increased your exercise level. And many of you might probably think you have strained your muscles, or you did something wrong during your exercises. In some instances, that might be the case. However, most of the time the soreness is indeed what we called Delayed Onset Muscles Soreness or DOMS.

When we are exercising, we are challenging our muscle fibers to produce force. During the process, it can result in microtears in the muscle fibers, which will elicit an inflammatory response and create pain. Hence, it is completely normal to feel sore in the muscles after you increased your exercise level or increase load in your training. That means you are working on your muscles! DOMS will typically be gone within 3-5 days.

FAQ:

How do I know if I have a strain or DOMS?

You will usually feel pain right away after you strain your muscle while exercising. However, DOMS will show up a day or two after your workout. If you are uncertain, make sure you consult a therapist and get accessed.

Can I work out with DOMS?

Yes! Your muscle will get stronger after they regenerate from the microtears. Even you are experiencing DOMS after the first day of exercising, continuing to exercise in the following days will not make your DOMS last longer or increase your soreness.
