Had a Hip Replacement Surgery After a Fall, Now What?

Last week, we have discussed how balance exercises are great training for fall prevention. Among the older adult population, even the slightest fall could result in a hip fracture. Whether you have received a total hip replacement (THR), or a partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty) by your surgeon, rehabilitation is essential for you to return to normal activity.

A key principle in post-surgery rehabilitation for hip replacement is early mobilization, or early movement. Rehabilitation sessions might start as early as the same day or the next day after the surgery. In the following paragraphs, we will show you three exercises that are common in a hip replacement rehabilitation session.

1) Ankle Pumps

You can begin this exercise immediately after your surgery and when you are comfortable to do so. With this exercise, lie on your back with your knees straight, slowly push your ankles up and down as if you are stepping on a gas pedal. This exercise can increase blood flow to your lower limbs, reduce swelling, and reduce the risk of blood clots. It is recommended to repeat this exercise 10 times for every hour that you are awake.

2) Weight Shift, Side to Side (with Support)

For this exercise, hold on to railings or a firm table for support. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, and then slowly shift your weight from one leg to the other leg. Repeat the exercise 8 times, 3 times a day. This exercise helps retrain your balance as well as the muscles of your buttock (abductors), which are crucial for healthy walking.

3) Quadriceps Sets (Straight Leg Push Down)

For this exercise, lie on your back, place a folded pillow under your knee. Press your whole operated leg into the bed. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10-30 times. Repeat the exercise 2-3 times a day. This exercise can strengthen the muscles of your buttock and thigh, as those muscles tend to be weakened after the surgery.

Further, it should be noted that every rehabilitation protocol is tailored to the individual. The selected exercises and the number of repetitions are determined based on each client’s circumstance. At C.E.S., our physiotherapists are capable of prescribing exercises for you and guiding you through your rehabilitation program after a hip replacement surgery.
